Gardeners Abbey Wood is committed to providing gardening and grounds care services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors, contractors and members of the public. We recognise that safe working practices are essential to delivering reliable, professional gardening services and to protecting the environment in which we work.

Policy Aim and Scope

The aim of this policy is to set out our approach to managing health and safety in all gardening, landscaping and grounds maintenance activities carried out by Gardeners Abbey Wood. This policy applies to all staff, whether permanent, temporary or self-employed under our control, and to all locations where we operate, including private gardens, communal grounds, commercial outdoor spaces and public areas.

Management Responsibilities

Management at Gardeners Abbey Wood has overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining effective health and safety arrangements. This includes:

Ensuring that safe systems of work are developed, communicated and monitored. Providing appropriate resources for health and safety, including equipment, training and supervision. Identifying and assessing risks associated with gardening work and taking steps to eliminate or reduce those risks. Making sure that all staff understand their responsibilities and follow company procedures at all times.

Managers and supervisors will lead by example, promote a positive safety culture and take immediate action where unsafe practices or conditions are identified.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees and contractors working under the control of Gardeners Abbey Wood share responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment. Everyone is expected to:

Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Follow all safety instructions, training, risk assessments and method statements provided. Use tools, machinery and personal protective equipment correctly and only for their intended purpose. Report accidents, incidents, near misses, hazards and defective equipment promptly to management. Cooperate fully with any health and safety investigation, inspection or improvement action.

Failure to comply with health and safety requirements may result in disciplinary action and, where relevant, removal from site.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before starting work, Gardeners Abbey Wood will assess the risks associated with the tasks to be performed, the tools and machinery to be used and the environment in which we are working. Our approach includes:

Carrying out site-specific risk assessments for gardening and maintenance jobs where appropriate. Identifying potential hazards such as uneven ground, water features, working at height, traffic movement, manual handling and use of powered equipment. Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment

Employees must follow the guidance provided and avoid taking shortcuts that increase the risk of musculoskeletal injuries.

Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Hazards

Where Gardeners Abbey Wood uses chemicals such as weed killers, fertilisers or cleaning products, we will:
